We were sitting in a little outdoor café in Greece. Across from us was a long table of women. They spoke quietly among themselves, dressed mostly in black or other somber colors.
Watching them from across the café, I quietly decided I knew their story.
I wondered if this might be a gathering after a funeral.
As we got ready to leave, I wanted so much to remember them, but I didn’t feel right taking a photograph without asking. So I stood, smiled, and held up my phone so they would know I was asking permission.
Their response was immediate.
The entire table burst into laughter. Hands flew into the air. Smiles spread from one end of the table to the other. They waved and laughed as if we’d been friends all along.
I couldn’t help but grin.
In a single moment, the story I had invented disappeared.
No funeral.
Just joy.
It was a gentle reminder that the stories we create about strangers are often more revealing than the strangers themselves. Sometimes all it takes is one small gesture to replace assumption with connection.
