For years now, whenever the Queen of the Night tells me she is almost ready, I set an alarm before I go to bed. Somewhere in the middle of the night I wake, step quietly into the darkness, and make my way to her.
It has become less a photograph and more a pilgrimage.
She offers her extraordinary bloom for only a few hours. By morning, the flower that filled the night with such impossible beauty is already closing, her work complete.
I have learned not to think of those midnight walks as interruptions to sleep. They are an annual invitation—a reminder that some of life’s greatest gifts refuse to fit into our schedules. They ask only one thing of us:
Will you come?
